Robotic spinal injection training system with sense of touch (LP SIM)

The robotic system simulating the skill of spinal injections in the virtual reality environment is designed to provide a suitable platform for teaching and evaluating this skill in medical students. This system consists of two parts, software and hardware. The hardware of the system creates conditions similar to those of performing spinal injections in the patient's lumbar region for the user and provides the user with the end of an LP needle. The system software also simulates the patient's L2 to L5 lumbar region and displays it to the user. The user can observe this area only from the skin and practice the skill of spinal injections, or by transpiring the skin and observing the lumbar vertebrae under it. The space and geometry of the patient's back in this simulator is reconstructed using 3D data extracted from MRI and CT scan images and is similar to the real spatial geometry of the patient's back. Also, the physical behavior of all the tissue layers of this area against the passage of the LP needle is reconstructed based on the real data obtained from the waist of the newly deceased corpse and is simulated in real time by the robotic hardware of the system. In this product, the force feedback by the robotic system to the user's hand is such that when the needle passes through different layers including skin, subcutaneous fat, intra and supraspinous ligaments, epidural space and meningeal layer in the virtual environment, a feeling similar to entering The needle is inserted into the lumbar region of the person.
